You can choose a range of display styles, select which corner of the screen you want to display alerts, and select how long to leave notifications on the screen among many other things.

You can even change the opacity of alerts. All of these settings can be accessed using the Growl preference panel installed in the System Preferences. Growl is a must-have notification tool for Mac users. It's the easiest, slickest and most convenient way to keep track of what's going on on your system.

Jan 15, PM. I never can tell! I was using Mail when it last appeared, I think, and I've had it pop up with Word. If it's not needed, I'll just tell it not to ask me again. Run it and post the report here. Before Growl was made developers either had to pop up a very basic window or some other ugliness nobody liked. Working with developers on Adium and Colloquy who wanted to implement their own custom notifications into their applications is what birthed this project.

Growl is stable and should work for as long as intel based programs work. Anyone who wants to run Growl is free to do so in an unsupported fashion. Growl Growl is a notification system for OS X.
