I took to this book very quickly, the tension is built up brilliantly and time flew away whilst I was reading it- always a good sign.
A book to make you slightly anxious and to perch on the edge of your seat. One clever, brilliantly written gripping read. Nov 17, Amanda rated it it was amazing. I read the synopsis for 'Behind Closed Doors' and it certainly sounded like the sort of psychological thriller that I would thoroughly enjoy. I wasn't wrong either. I thoroughly enjoyed reading 'Behind Closed Doors' but more about that in a bit. I can't say that I took to the main character of Tina Valentine at all.
There was something about her that just set off little alarm bells for me. She is the sort of woman that many would be jealous of. She has a happyish marriage, she has two adorable ch I read the synopsis for 'Behind Closed Doors' and it certainly sounded like the sort of psychological thriller that I would thoroughly enjoy.
She has a happyish marriage, she has two adorable children, she has a successful career in a law firm and she has a beautiful house. I got the impression that Tina is extremely paranoid but then I suppose she has reason to. From the beginning of the story it's pretty obvious that something has happened in her past but she has done her best to forget about it or put it completely out of her head. The appearance of Megan triggers something in Tina and every so often Tina tries to mentally sort out the muddle that is her past.
At the beginning I found Tina not particularly very likeable, very paranoid, very abrupt to the point of rudeness, very self centred and basically a pain in the backside with an overinflated sense of her own importance. That said as the book went on and the story developed I felt that I gained a better understanding of why she is the way she is but it didn't make any difference as to what I thought about her. It didn't take me long at all for me to get into this book.
In fact by the time I got to the end of the first page, I knew that it wouldn't be very easy to prise the book out of my hands. The way in which the story started certainly grabbed my attention and I was interested to discover how the story was going to pan out.
The more of the book that I read, the more I wanted to read and the quicker the pages were turning. The book is quite fast paced anyway but I seemed to race through the latterly half of the book.
At one point the pages were turning that quickly that it was almost as if they were turning themselves and then all of a sudden I reached the end of the book, which I was disappointed about. I don't mean that as a negative but I was enjoying the author's writing style, the characters and the storylines so much that I just wanted the book to continue.
As I mentioned above, my interest was immediately snagged by the fact that the story started with such an intriguing e-mail. The author certainly knows how to grab your attention and then keep that attention throughout the course of the book. As I mention in previous reviews often my attention will wander if I am not enjoying a book, but my mind stayed right where it was whilst I was reading 'Behind Closed Doors'.
My sole focus was on the book and on the book alone. Sadie has written a book that certainly kept me guessing and on the edge of my seat throughout. The author uses such powerful and vivid descriptions that I really did feel as though I was part of the story myself. I can't wait to read more of Sadie's work in the future. May 14, Joanna Lambert rated it really liked it. Tina Valentine and her husband Glyn have a perfect marriage and two gorgeous children. They work in the same law practice and Tina is keen to make partner.
However, the arrival of a new secretary, Megan Pearson, threatens those ambitions. From the beginning I was pulled into this story.
There are certainly a lot of twists and turns to this story. I have to say I was surprised by the ending. Jan 02, Jessica Belmont rated it it was amazing. Sadie Ryan has written a suspenseful and emotional novel. With all the twists and turns, I was glued to the pages. I was enthralled. What makes this psychological thriller more chilling is the fact that it is plausible.
I was gripped with all the emotions as I read through this novel. I love the characters. They are so realistic, but their presence in the novel kept it c Sadie Ryan has written a suspenseful and emotional novel. They are so realistic, but their presence in the novel kept it chilling and tense. Sadie Ryan knows how to write with emotions, and keeps her readers feeling all the helplessness her characters were feeling. Highly recommended!! All opinions are my own.
Jun 02, Lindsey Brogan rated it it was amazing. This book floored me, it drew me in from the beginning and I was intrigued as to who Megan was and what she was up to. I did get the feeling that Tina was having some sort of breakdown. I could feel the confusion whilst events were happening. I felt as disillusioned as Tina did, which added to the worrying feeling I had all the way through. I imagined sitting and watching Megan filling my place at home, at work, personal life and knowing my most inner secrets.
It left me feeling angry and as tho This book floored me, it drew me in from the beginning and I was intrigued as to who Megan was and what she was up to. It left me feeling angry and as though I was shouting at Tina to get control back, to wake up, to sort the situation.
It was like I was under water and nobody could hear me, I was that drawn in to the story. I absolutely recommend Ryan's other books, When he finds you and her latest, Guilty.
She is a fabulous writer! May 17, Isabelle D rated it really liked it Shelves: choc-lit-and-ruby-fiction , choc-lit-ruby-ebooks. Does it make sense if I say that this book made me feel awful in a good way?
Probably not. What I mean is that I wanted to finish it quickly to reach the end of Tina's nightmare and stop feeling so upset but at the same time I did enjoy the story. It's so powerful. I don't think I've ever wished I could slap, punch and kick a fictional character as much as while reading this.
I can't comment on the last chapters for obvious reasons so I'll stop here and just recommend the book to anyone w Does it make sense if I say that this book made me feel awful in a good way? I can't comment on the last chapters for obvious reasons so I'll stop here and just recommend the book to anyone who enjoys suspense. May 14, Barbara rated it it was amazing.
This is a really gripping, can't put down thriller. The horror of having a new staff member being able to convince everyone you are going mad seems unbelievable but Tina could not stop herself from providing more and more collaborative evidence.
Even her family appeared to trust newcomer Megan. The horror just goes on and on. Until the end which is so shocking I won't say more to give anything away. Loved this book totally. Jul 21, Victoria Gill rated it it was amazing. One of the fastest reads I've had in a while due to the incredible unputdownable story. I was in it, well into the story. I was quite happy to stay up late just to keep going, it is an amazing and very well written story. The story still hasn't left me, I'm gutted I've finished it.
It had me hanging right to the end as to how it was going to finish. I was dreading a rubbish ending, but I was not disappointed, it was just plain brilliant. Apr 15, Megan Partington rated it really liked it.
I could not put this book down, it was so gripping. To the point the last chapter has still left me shocked! Throughout this book I was on edge as I had no clue what was going to happen or how the story would pan out. Sadie did a great job of writing the character of Megan in a way no one would like her at all Would highly recommend. This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers.
To view it, click here. I spent the majority of the book feeling annoyed! Annoyed at Tina for what was happening to her, annoyed with her husband for not having her back and really annoyed at how fickle some people can be when it comes to an attractive person!! But - by the end of the book I was thinking clever Tina very clever! Apr 10, Victoria rated it it was amazing. What a fab psychological thriller. I was hooked from the start. A fast paced and gripping read. The story wakes up your inner emotions.
Lots of twists and turns which keep you on your toes, breathless at times! An excellent debut novel. Just brilliant. Jul 17, Glyn rated it really liked it. Mixed feelings about this one. In places I had to put it down because it was so ludicrously unlikely, but still made me curious to read on.
The second half was quite gripping. Overall I enjoyed it, it was good, but not brilliant. May 10, Morgan Schulman rated it liked it Shelves: reader-s-copy. Serviceable workplace thriller. The upside is that Tyrone and Fiz can hook up and raise their sprogs together - to nice, average folk with crazy spouses.
I don't think Kirsty will be leaving in the near future and I suspect that the writers will stretch this story as much as they can, especially now that a baby has entered the picture. Considering what she has done so far, Kirsty is now capable of anything and a new baby certainly won't cure her raging hormones, possessiveness, jealousy and anger mangagement issues.
It's almost certain that her problems will escalate over the next few months. As much as I disapprove of Kirsty's actions, I find her character intriguing because she is multi-layered, complex and troubled. These qualities would be hard for many actresses to play out but Natalie has done a fine job so far. I have also been impressed by the writers who have slowly peeled back the layers to expose the many facets of Kirsty's personality.
I don't think we as viewers, or even Tyrone, know the real Kirsty yet. Other stories, actors and characters don't even come close.
You're kidding right? She's an excellent character. Just because she's not someone you'd want to meet in real life, doesn't mean she's not a great soap villain. And unlike Tracy, she's got layers. She's insecure, paranoid and damaged which leads to her vile behaviour. I hope Kirsty stays around a bit longer. I really hate her scenes but NG is a fantastic actress as has been said before. This is one storyline where the writers have been spot on and the character casting perfect.
It does make me wonder if this story line is being written by someone outside the 'usual' story writing team. If they redeem her, it won't be a magical cure. She'll have councilling and it'll be up and down but eventually I think she'll figure it out, if the actress is meant to stay. I hope so, she's excellent. The ratings are high so she won't be going anywhere soon. I don't think the writers would have her harming a baby but I can see poor Ty taking a lot more thumps as Kirsty's character spins totally out of control.
She's gaslighting Tina and that dumbass Tommy which is also great to watch. I wonder if the writers can put Gail in the picture somewhere here.. Would be fun to watch those two try to out-manipulate the other. I will also be interested to see if Kirsty's parents return following the birth of the baby. Perhaps they will play pivotal roles in the next chapter of this storyline. Have we seen them since they appeared at her birthday party?
I got the sense then that they would inevitably return somewhere down the line. Kirsty is one of the more complex and better developed characters that has been brought into the programme over the past few years.
Tommy really wants to be loyal to Tina, but even he tells her it was a stupid thing to do. It happens in a busy pub with everyone watching, and Tina and Tommy become public enemy number one.
