He's never split his soul or created any offspring, so he never had to deal with the passing of a legacy or dividing his power among the many. The offspring thing makes sense since it's unclear how a skeleton would accomplish that, and avoiding the inevitability of splitting his soul simply comes down to him entering a never-ending slumber in the time following his defeat of the dragons alongside Lord Gwyn. After defeating Gravelord Nito and obtaining his lord soul, players can investigate the arena in which they fight him.
Like many other parts of the series, there's a lot alluded to in the environment and assumptions can be made based on learned knowledge.
Next to Nito's giant sarcophagus is a smaller coffin. It's unclear what the purpose of this coffin is and who might have used it. It being so close to Nito likely means that this individual may have been important and served a purpose in Nito's existence in some way or another. Dark Souls as a series is good at connecting the dots between the games and included callbacks and references to characters.
Not only does that title insinuate Nito was the creator, but each of those names ends with his name. Each was created with the idea of comforting those next to death and darkness as well as making sure that the deceased housed within the Undead Crypt remain undisturbed.
Humans and other living things with true sentience and a sense of self will always question their existence. Churches and religious temples hone in on this to bring people in and give them an explanation for life and their very own existence. This is why the idea of travelers searching for Gravelord Nito in the Catacombs isn't surprising.
These people end up becoming Gravelord Servants and this transition most often occurs in the moments following them paying respects to the original lord of death and disease. The Gravelord Servants and occultists weren't the same thing, as the former worshipped Gravelord Nito's very existence, whereas the latter were simply looking to steal his Rite of Kindling power and use it for their own gain.
Thankfully for everyone involved, these occultists failed in their mission, dying in the tombs Nito called home. A fitting end to a group who never deserved the right to use a power they didn't understand, and those who try and take from the embodiment of death should end up welcoming the very concept into their existence.
The Fenito were created to ensure the deceased within the Undead Crypt rest undisturbed. When falling into Nito's domain, some damage will be incurred. This can be negated through use of the Fall Control sorcery. If Fall Control is unavailable, make sure to heal once landed, preferably with Estus as the other forms might not be fast enough to avoid Nito's ranged attack.
Nito is a very large, very slow boss with average HP. This makes large weapons and slow spells excellent candidates for dealing damage to him quickly. Nito's attacks often cause toxin and can be quite damaging, but almost all of them have a very long startup time and are easily avoidable. All of the attacks except the sword dance can be blocked. Nito is aided by some minor Skeletons initially, and Giant Skeletons if the player ventures too far from the place they fell down from.
Both types of Skeletons resurrect after being killed, unless they are killed with a Divine weapon even with a Divine weapon a Phantom can't kill the skeletons, only the Host can.
They are no tougher than the Skeletons found throughout The Catacombs and the Tomb of the Giants , but may prove to be a fatal distraction to fighting Nito himself. Because Nito is so slow, it is a good idea to kill all of his minions with a Divine weapon before engaging with him, so the skeletons will not get in the way.
As long as you are not close to him, the only attack you have to watch out for is his Gravelord Greatsword listen for the scream and start running. Wearing the Slumbering Dragoncrest Ring will help in avoiding confrontation with the Giant Skeletons at the back of the cavern. He can easily be strafed behind for free hits, resulting in large amounts of damage — especially if attacking him with fire weapons or pyromancies as he is weak to fire.
Nito slowly raises his weapon, then slams it into the ground. Difficult to block, but can be easily dodged. Also, Nito pauses for a few moments afterwards, leaving him open to attacks.
Only used by Nito when the player is either far away from him, or when they are out of sight range. After a scream, Nito plunges his sword into the ground, where it emerges from underneath the player, causing toxic buildup along with decent damage. It has a similar effect to the Gravelord Sword Dance miracle. After pausing to charge the attack, Nito will expel a wave of darkness in all directions, causing Magic damage and Toxic buildup.
Nito's hand glows red, whilst also attempting to grab the player. They do absolutely insane damage, are seemingly impossible to run away from and there are dozens of them.
The only way to get past them is to pray and zick-zack yourself through the valley up ahead. He will spawn fake versions of them which are of lighter textures than him and all they do is shoot the occassional magic at you. Hit the original a couple of times to make the boss seemingly harmless. Once dead, head up to the right here. You will come across a seemingly pitch-black area of the game. This section is also notorious for being hard as It is filled with dangers.
Equip a skull lantern If you have one, drops from the Necromancers and proceed through the dark or follow the glowing orbs carefully. The threat here will mostly be Giant skeletons. They do devastating damage but are rather easy when avoided. At here there is a bonfire, simply jump down the platform to the left and rest or head on ahead to the right. You'll come across an NPC that does a small event if you go to the purple shining orb. He'll kick you down to a bunch of corpses that have a Skull Lantern on them.
I recommend ignoring If you have one already and going to the right, following the giant blue orbs. You'll come across several versions of the previous "Miniboss". Ignore them and head upwards.
